How DCBL help business owners improve their cashflow

Every day at DCBL we speak to clients who have been affected by late payment. It remains one of the biggest threats to the success and sustainability of UK businesses. According to the Small Business Commissioner, an estimated 14,000 businesses close each year as a direct result of late payments, equating to approximately 38 business closures every day. In addition, late payment is estimated to cost the UK economy almost £11 billion annually and affects more than 1.5 million businesses each year.

The Office of the Small Business Commissioner, a Government-backed organisation dedicated to improving payment practices and supporting small businesses, continues to highlight the significant impact that unpaid invoices and poor payment behaviours have across the UK economy.

Its research has revealed:

• Late payments are estimated to cost the UK economy almost £11 billion every year.

• Approximately 14,000 businesses fail annually because of late payment, equivalent to 38 closures every day.

• More than 1.5 million UK businesses are affected by late payments each year.

• Businesses are owed an estimated £26 billion in overdue payments at any given time.

• Business owners spend valuable time chasing outstanding debts instead of focusing on growth, customer service and operational improvements.

Following the publication of this research, Emma Jones, Small Business Commissioner, emphasised the importance of improving payment culture across the UK and encouraging organisations to adopt better payment practices through initiatives such as the Government-backed Fair Payment Code.

The Fair Payment Code, which replaced the former Prompt Payment Code, recognises organisations that demonstrate responsible payment practices and a commitment to paying suppliers fairly and on time. By promoting transparency, collaboration and prompt settlement of invoices, the Code aims to strengthen business relationships and improve cash flow throughout UK supply chains.

At DCBL, we fully support the principles of the Fair Payment Code and encourage organisations to adopt payment practices that help create a stronger and more sustainable business environment. However, we also recognise the reality faced by many businesses. Despite ongoing efforts to improve payment culture, millions of pounds remain tied up in unpaid invoices, placing unnecessary pressure on cash flow, growth plans and day-to-day operations.
