From the Accounts Team to the World Stage: Alex Howe’s Wheelchair Rugby World Cup Journey
15th October 2026
At DCBL, we are fortunate to work alongside people who bring passion, commitment and determination to everything they do. This month, we are celebrating one of our own, Accounts Team Leader Alex Howe, who is preparing to represent Scotland at the Wheelchair Rugby World Cup in Australia. For Alex, the opportunity to compete on one of the sport’s biggest stages is something that still feels surreal.
“It’s absolutely incredible. I have been playing for a long time, but only really got involved at the international level a little over a year ago. To be going to Australia for the World Cup is beyond my wildest expectations and I feel really privileged to have been given this opportunity.”
Alex’s journey into wheelchair rugby began unexpectedly during his school years. While waiting for the gym to open, one of his PE teachers introduced him to the sport. Then, a team manager from Mersey Storm, the predecessor club to Widnes Wheelchair Rugby, spotted his potential and invited him to attend training sessions. He accepted the invitation and never looked back.
“I went along and the rest is history.”
Now, years later, that decision has led to international recognition and the chance to compete against some of the world’s best players. Although Australia is familiar territory for Alex, having visited the country around eight years ago, this trip will be unlike any previous visit.
“It feels great, although I can’t say I’m looking forward to the flight! I’ve been before, but obviously this is going to be a completely different experience.”
Despite the prestige of the tournament, Alex remains focused on the experience itself and the opportunity to test himself against elite competition.
“Just having the opportunity to compete alongside some of the best players in the world is plenty for me. We’re up against some incredible competition, but that doesn’t mean we’ll put up any less of a fight.”
That determination is something colleagues at DCBL will instantly recognise. As Accounts Team Leader, Alex plays a key role within the business, balancing team leadership, coaching and development, client reporting, financial analysis and transactional finance responsibilities. No two days are quite the same, and his role continues to evolve as he becomes increasingly involved in management accounting and business analytics. The fast-paced nature of the organisation is one of the things he enjoys most.
“I love fast-paced work and there’s no shortage of it here. There’s always new and interesting challenges to try and figure out and I’m never at risk of getting bored.”
However, it is the people around him that make the biggest difference.
“I think, just like any job, the people you work with are arguably more important than the work itself. I’m really glad to be in such a tight-knit team that’s able to have a laugh together while still getting everything done.”
Alex’s selection for Scotland is a fantastic achievement and one that reflects the resilience, dedication and ambition he demonstrates both on and off the court. His journey is also a powerful reminder of the impact that sport can have in creating opportunities, building confidence and inspiring others to pursue goals that may once have seemed out of reach.
Everyone at DCBL is incredibly proud of Alex and wishes him and the Scotland squad the very best as they take on the world’s best in Australia.
Good luck, Alex. We are all behind you.
